What Wave is
Wave is accounting software for small businesses in the US and Canada, with invoicing built in. The free Starter plan covers unlimited invoices, estimates, bills and bookkeeping records, a cash-flow dashboard and the mobile app. Pro ($19 a month or $190 a year per business) adds bank connections through Plaid, automatic categorization of transactions, receipt capture, automated late-payment reminders, attachments, reusable message templates, extra users and the removal of Wave branding from invoice footers. Online payments are an optional add-on on both plans: cards cost 2.9% + 60¢ on Starter and 2.9% + $0 for the first ten transactions a month on Pro, bank payments 1% with a $1 minimum. Payroll and bookkeeping services are paid extras.
What Invoxa is
Invoxa is invoicing software: invoices, estimates and purchase orders on the web and in the iPhone app, with one plan. Invoxa Pro costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year ($4.99 a month) and includes unlimited invoices, estimates, purchase orders, clients and emails. New accounts get a 3-day free trial without a credit card. Clients open documents from a link without an account, approve and sign estimates, and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through your own Stripe account. There is no bookkeeping, bank feed or payroll.
Pricing in detail
The real cost of Wave depends on how you get paid. If your clients pay by card through Wave, the Starter plan costs you 2.9% + 60¢ per payment: on a $200 invoice that is $6.40, and on twenty such invoices a month about $128. Pro removes the 60¢ for the first ten card payments a month and costs $19 a month on top. If your clients pay by bank transfer or check outside Wave, Starter costs nothing, but then invoices go out as links or PDFs rather than through Wave's own sending.
Invoxa costs the same whatever your volume: $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Card payments go through your Stripe account at Stripe's own rate (2.9% + 30¢ for domestic US cards), and Invoxa adds nothing. For a business that sends many invoices and takes card payments, the subscription is the only fixed cost; for a business that sends two invoices a month and gets paid by check, Wave's free plan is hard to beat.
Where Wave is stronger
- Bookkeeping. Income, expenses and bank transactions live next to the invoices, and Pro imports and categorizes transactions for you. Invoxa has none of this.
- Free plan. Unlimited invoices and estimates for $0, as long as you are in the US or Canada.
- Android. Wave has iOS and Android apps; Invoxa's Android app is still in development.
- Automated reminders. With Pro or online payments, Wave emails late-payment reminders 3, 7 and 14 days after the due date. Invoxa shows you the invoice status but does not send reminders by itself.
- Bank payments. Wave takes ACH and EFT at 1% with a $1 minimum.
Where Invoxa is stronger
- Any country. Invoxa works wherever you are and bills in 119 currencies; Wave is limited to businesses in the US and Canada.
- Purchase orders and estimate signatures. Invoxa makes invoices, estimates and purchase orders from the same form; estimates can be approved and signed by the client and turned into invoices.
- No platform fee on payments. Your Stripe account receives the money at Stripe's rate, with nothing added. On a $100 card payment that is $3.20 at Stripe versus $3.50 on Wave Starter.
- No branding, attachments and unlimited emails on the one plan. Wave needs Pro to remove its footer branding and to attach files to invoices.
- Price. $5.99 a month, or $4.99 a month billed yearly, against $19 a month for Wave Pro.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wave really free?
Wave's Starter plan is free and includes unlimited invoices, estimates and bookkeeping records. You pay when you use Wave's online payments (2.9% + 60¢ per card payment on Starter) or upgrade to Pro ($19 a month or $190 a year) for bank connections, automated reminders, attachments, extra users and the removal of Wave branding.
Is Invoxa free?
You can fill in an invoice in the Invoxa invoice generator without an account. A new account gets a 3-day free trial of Invoxa Pro with no credit card; after that Pro costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year. There is no free plan.
Can I use Wave outside the US and Canada?
No. Wave is available only to businesses in the US and Canada; its help center says users elsewhere cannot send invoices through Wave. Invoxa works in any country, and card payments need a Stripe account in a country Stripe supports.
Which has lower card fees, Wave or Invoxa?
Invoxa charges nothing on payments: your client pays on Stripe's checkout page and Stripe's standard fee applies (2.9% + 30¢ per domestic US card). Wave's Starter plan charges 2.9% + 60¢ per card payment; Pro drops the fixed part to $0 for the first 10 transactions each month. On a $100 card payment that is $3.20 through Stripe with Invoxa and $3.50 on Wave Starter; the difference grows on small invoices and disappears on Pro's first ten payments a month.
Does Invoxa do bookkeeping like Wave?
No. Invoxa creates and sends invoices, estimates and purchase orders, tracks payments and gives reports on sales, payments, taxes, profit and loss and customer aging. It does not connect to your bank or categorize expenses. If you need books, use Wave or an accounting tool alongside Invoxa.
