What Zoho Invoice is

Zoho Invoice is a free invoicing product from Zoho, the company behind Zoho Books and Zoho CRM. There is no paid tier. Within the limits, 500 invoices a year, two users, three projects and two organizations, it covers a lot: invoices and quotes, recurring invoices with automatic sending and card charging, automated payment reminders, expenses and time tracking, a customer portal, customizable templates, invoices in more than ten languages and apps for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac. Online payments go through one of more than ten gateways; with Zoho Payments in the US a domestic card costs 2.9% + 30¢ and ACH 0.8%, capped at $5. The catches are the "Powered by Zoho Invoice" branding on your documents and the deletion of data after more than 180 days without activity.

What Invoxa is

Invoxa is invoicing software with one plan. Invoxa Pro costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year ($4.99 a month) and includes unlimited invoices, estimates, purchase orders, clients and emails. New accounts get a 3-day free trial without a credit card. Documents carry your logo and brand color on one of 8 templates, and nothing from Invoxa. Clients open documents from a link without an account, approve and sign estimates, and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through your own Stripe account. Invoxa runs in the browser and in an iPhone app; an Android app is in development.

Pricing in detail

Zoho Invoice costs nothing as long as you stay under 500 invoices a year. That is about 40 a month, enough for most freelancers and many small service businesses. The real price is the branding on your invoices and the two-user limit; if you grow past the cap, Zoho's answer is Zoho Billing, a different product with its own pricing.

Invoxa costs $5.99 a month, or $59.99 a year, whatever your volume. Nothing is capped and nothing is branded. Card payments cost Stripe's own rate (2.9% + 30¢ for domestic US cards) and Invoxa adds nothing, which is the same as the Zoho Payments card rate.

Where Zoho Invoice is stronger

  • Price. Free, with no trial to think about.
  • Automation. Recurring invoices are sent for you, saved cards can be charged automatically, and payment reminders go out without you. Invoxa prepares recurring invoices as drafts and has no automatic reminders.
  • Time and expenses. Timesheets, projects and billable expenses sit next to the invoices; Invoxa has none of this.
  • Platforms and languages. Android, Windows and Mac apps, and invoices in 10+ languages out of the box.
  • Customer portal. Clients see all their transactions, accept quotes and pay in bulk.

Where Invoxa is stronger

  • No cap. Unlimited invoices, estimates, purchase orders, clients and emails.
  • No vendor branding. Your documents show your business only.
  • Purchase orders. Made from the same form as invoices and estimates, with their own numbering.
  • Estimate signatures and deposits. Clients approve and sign estimates online; invoices can ask for a deposit and record partial payments.
  • Your data stays. No deletion for inactivity.
